How to Split a Tip Pool by Hours and Role Points

How to Split a Tip Pool by Hours and Role Points

A weighted tip pool can account for time worked, agreed role weights, or both. TipWeigh calculates the shares and checks that the final payouts match the tips collected.

1. Enter the Shift Total

Add cash tips and card tips separately. Use the signed adjustment field for a return or correction: a minus sign reduces the amount to distribute. Pick one currency for the whole shift; TipWeigh formats USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, and AUD but does not convert between them.

2. Choose the Pool Structure

Keep one 100% pool when everyone shares the same rules. If front- and back-of-house tips use different rules, add a second pool, name both pools, and enter whole-number percentages that total 100. Each pool can use its own allocation method.

3. Pick the Weighting Method

Use Hours worked when each person's weight should be their time on the shift. Use Role points when the agreed points alone set the split. Choose Points × hours when both should count. Equal shares are available when every eligible person receives the same weight.

4. Add Staff and Set Eligibility

Enter each person's name, optional role, hours, and points. The pool checkboxes decide where that person participates. A person can be eligible for either pool or both, depending on the policy you entered.

5. Check and Export the Payouts

The reconciliation ticket lists each person's weight and payout. TipWeigh floors the exact shares to whole cents, then assigns leftover cents to the largest fractional remainders. The balanced status confirms that the payouts equal the cash, card, and adjustment total.

You can copy the payout list, print the record, export it as CSV, or download a JSON workspace backup. The active draft is saved in the current browser profile, so keep a backup before clearing browser data or changing devices.

TipWeigh performs the calculation you enter. It does not decide who is eligible for a pool or provide wage, payroll, tax, or legal advice.
